FAQs

What is an agronomist?

In the UK, an agronomist is a person trained in crop protection and integrated pest management.
They provide advice to growers on how to manage crops effectively, sustainably, and within the law. The certifying body, BASIS, ensures that agronomists giving crop protection advice and supplying products are properly qualified, act within the legal framework, and work in the best interests of the crop, the grower and the general public.

The word “agronomy” comes from the French agronomie, itself derived from the Greek agros (ἄγρος), meaning “field,” and nomos (νόμος), meaning “management” or “law.” In simple terms, agronomy is the science and practice of managing land and crops.
